University of Naughty - Lecture Series
The following is a transcript of Lesson 7 in the University of Naughty's lecture series, "Fire Play" as it was given on 3/15/2009. It has been edited for length, clarity, and relevance. Some of the more pertinent discussions and funny moments have been left in, for the sake of evidence that it wasn't as boring as you might think.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Welcome A/all and to The Edge's U of N Class and Discussion night. The topic tonight is "Fire Play".
Please keep Yyour greetings and comments to PM unless they are class related,
i do hope Yyou will stay for the presentation and enjoy it.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Fire Play is clearly not beginner's play.
It falls into the realm of Edge Play. This meaning it is something to learn from one
who has demonstrated experience with the materials. Just the nature of some of this
play and a single wrong move or position can create a dangerous if not tragic
outcome. It is wise to have a second person standing by to do Fire extinguishing so the
Dom/me can stay focused on the submissive's care should things get out of control.
First we will start with some general terms.
Paddlefish says to everyone:
sits straighter and tightly wraps a fin around a pencil so she can take good notes.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Terms Used In Fire Play
Baton: A wooden rod, with cotton batting on the end used to light an area or hold a
flammable liquid. Also called a torch.
Bouncing: The act of striking a lighted torch against an object depositing a small
amount of the flammable substance on the object being struck.
Cupping: An ancient form of massage. Using a vacuum, the skin is drawn up into a
vessel and thereby stretched and massaged.
Flash Cotton: A magician’s trick using very flammable cotton. Burns very quickly, very
intensely, and completely.
Leather Rounds: Round pieces of leather used for various purposes.
Streaking: Using an unlit torch to deposit flammable liquid on an object and then
lighting it.
Torch: A rod with cotton batting on the end, made be made of any non-conductive
substance. Used to hold the flammable as it is lit.
Vessel: A glass jar, heat resistant and not easily broken or cracked. Should be clear or
lightly colored.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Styles of Play
Rubbing Alcohol
This is the standard rubbing alcohol found in drug stores that is 70% isopropyl alcohol.
This is the riskiest form of fire play and requires the most caution. Two important
safety points when doing fire play with rubbing alcohol: alcohol flows down, fire
burns up. These points will be repeated. Start small. Take a 100% cotton swab, dip it
in the rubbing alcohol and light it. Carefully and lightly brush it across the skin on the
underside of your wrist. This is what the flame will feel like on your partner's skin.
Now let your bottom repeat this same procedure on themselves. If it feels okay to
them, you may continue. If it's too hot, stop—this type of fire play is not for them.
Paddlefish says to everyone: is glad she has 911 on speed-dial. ~s~
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
If you're ready to go on, proceed by painting alcohol on an area of the skin on the
subject's forearm with the q-tip. Watch for drips! Place your hand over the uppermost
part of the forearm where the alcohol starts. With the q-tip, light the alcohol. Let it
flash up only once, and then use your hand to snuff out the fire by wiping your hand
down over the flame. Practice this technique of lighting small patches on different
areas of the body before moving on to doing larger regions.
Keep a hand towel near by to wipe the excess alcohol from the skin before reapplying.
This helps you control the amount of alcohol on the skin each time you light it. Keep
your free hand between the flame and my bottom's head at all times when lighting. It
makes it easier to snuff out the flame if necessary, and better to burn your own hand
then the submissive's head. Please note that repeatedly lighting the same spot will
make the skin more sensitive to the burning. Avoid doing this.
~andrea gail~says to Paddlefish:
lol
Wraith's ~tyme~says to Paddlefish:
very important....that # *w*
Paddlefish says to tyme:
Sorry to interrupt. ~lighting myself on fire as punishment.........only I'm all wet~
~L~
Wraith's ~tyme~
says to everyone:
If you want to reduce the time it takes for the alcohol to completely burn, you can
dilute it with water or use 50% rubbing alcohol. Adding water will reduce the alcohol
content, and less alcohol means there's less fuel to burn. The flame will go out much
more quickly. It's important to stay away from the face and head. And watch out for
the hair—it will burn! You can also apply the alcohol with small sponge brushes found
in hardware stores.
Again, watch for drips. The alcohol will continue to flow down the skin if too much is
applied. These sponge brushes can hold a lot of alcohol. Be especially aware if you are
working on a area of the body with crevices such as the breasts, buttocks or folds in
skin. You don't want alcohol getting into these areas and burning. It can cause injury.
Keep in mind that body hair will burn, too. It's not recommended using this type of
fire play on the genitals. Besides having lots of folds and crevices, the skin of the
genitals will readily absorb the alcohol and may burn more intensely than intended.
Wraith {tyme}says to Paddlefish:
Drags You into My private Aquarium and spanks Ya with an eraser..*G*
Wraith's ~tyme~says to Paddlefish:
it is used for pleasure, not punishment ...ever *s*
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Also included in this type of fire play is the use of alcohol torches. Some make their
own from wooden dowels with small amounts of 100% cotton tied on with 100%
cotton thread. Stay away from "cosmetic puffs." They are made from artificial fibers
that will melt and can cause burns. Again, stay away from the face and head and watch
for burning body hair.

says to Wraith: ~smackin' ya with a cotton swab~ Hush, you! School is in session. ~g`
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Another Style
Streaking:
Using two torches held in the same hand, one lit, one unlit, a line of alcohol is laid
down on the skin. This is then allowed to sit for a moment and begin to evaporate,
then it is lit. It is allowed to burn dependent on the amount that was laid down; more
can burn longer, and the response of the submissive. It is extinguished using the hand
not holding the torches. Should the hand catch on fire, simply smother it in the fire
blanket or if only a small amount, wave it quickly and it will go out. Be certain to keep
the lit torch as the upper one while you are holding them or else you may end up with
TWO LIT TORCHES.

Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Another Style
Bouncing:
Using a lit torch, the skin is struck sharply with the torch, causing alcohol to be
deposited and lit at the same time. This should not be left on very long as the alcohol is
very thin and burns the skin very easily.
Wraith's ~tyme~
says to everyone:
Another style:
Cupping:
For those of you who saw the movie Dangerous Liaisons, cupping is what the nuns did
to Michelle Pfeiffer at the end of the movie. It's a take off on a Medieval method of
blood letting—only without the blood.
1. take a small leather patch and place it on the area of the body you want to cup. The
buttocks, breasts and back work especially well.
2. Then take a small 100% cotton ball and dip it into some rubbing alcohol, squeezing
out the excess.
3. Place the cotton ball on the leather patch and light it. While the alcohol in the
cotton ball is burning, bring a sturdy glass jar or cup, open end down, straight down
over the flame so that the flame goes up into the glass as you press the rim of the glass
into the skin. As the flame is snuffed out by the lack of oxygen, the air inside cools and
creates a vacuum. The suction from this vacuum pulls the skin into glass and is actually
strong enough to hold the glass into place even when the subject stands. The larger the
glass, the stronger the vacuum.
4. You should be aware that, while cupping is not extremely painful for your partner,
it often causes bruising. Most think the bruises are quite pretty as they form in the
exact shape of the cup mouth. You can use cups that are round, square, and
rectangular and be on the lookout for other interesting designs like a star shape.

Another Style
Flash Cotton:
Cotton used by magician to make large flashes. Most effective in a darkened room,
hence the term "flash" cotton. It looks like cotton, but it's actually made of
nitrocellulose, which is the same material used in flash paper. It must be pulled out to
a thin "haze" in order to be used on the skin. If it's too thick, it will be too hot when it
burns. Lay a wisp of the cotton on top of your forearm and light it with a lighter. It
will literary go up in a flash. Again, try this with a small wisp on the forearm of your
bottom. If he or she is okay with the intensity, you may continue. If not, stop here. It
makes very spectacular displays and can be used to make designs. It can also be used to
burn the skin in patterns.
Using previously pulled out cotton, lay it gently on the skin, DO NOT press it down
as this can cause a burn, and light on end. The fire will travel to the other end. You can
make spirals or any design. The cotton will be damp with water when you open the
package and will need to be left out a couple of days to dry. After it has dried, you can
take the cotton and pull the fibers into wispy threads or twist it into a fine cord. You
can lay out the thin cotton strands in intricate designs across your subject's reclining
body. Stay away for their face and don't wrap the cotton under any part of the body.
Remember: The flame will burn upwards, burning the flesh above if you wrap it. Be
ready to snuff out burning body hair with your hand.
Again, one of your hands should be poised between the cotton and the bottom's head
in case of an emergency. Use the flash cotton sparingly. It doesn't take much to get the
desired effect, and too much may burn your partner.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Safety Preparation
You will be setting a Human Being on fire.
This is an inherently dangerous practice and SHOULD BE PRACTICED MANY
MANY TIMES on glass table’s tops and other non-flammable objects before being
considered for actual practice. It must be practiced for a long time before doing it
even on Yyourself before ever trying it on another Human Being.
Paddlefish says to everyone:
ponders "setting a human being on fire"........then ponders covering that person in
fire-retardant foam. ~g~
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Safety Materials
Alcohol Type:
Important!
70 percent isopropyl alcohol as our fuel source (30 percent of it is water and that acts
as a barrier between the alcohol and the skin) You can also use 50%, it has an even
higher water ratio.
Drop Cloth:
Use a Fire Retardant drop cloth to cover the table or floor that the submissive will be
laid on. This helps keep the fire from spreading should an accident occur.
Fire Blanket:
Used to smoother the fire, any large, cloth item such as a large bath towel will work,
but it MUST BE COMPLETELY INTACT. Any hole or weak spot in it could allow air
to the flames.
Fire Bucket!
Fire Extinguisher!
Water Reserve!
any or all of these should be available but at least one.
Paddlefish says to everyone:
wonders if canned Redi-Whip would do the trick. ~g~
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Area Preparation
Drop Cloth:
Lay out the drop cloth to cover any flammable surface within reach of the fire.
Layout:
The fire blanket should be laid so that it can, in one smooth motion, be pulled to cover
the submissive to the greatest extent possible. This allows for easy smothering of the
flame.
Minimum Materials:
Fire Blanket,
Drop Cloth,
Torches,
Extinguisher,
Alcohol,
Cupping vessels,
Leather rounds,
Cotton balls,
Flash cotton,
Submissive that enjoys extreme sensation,
Dom/Domme that enjoys giving extreme sensations.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Making of Toys
Torches:
The torches are made using a wooden doweling rod, this is slipped or hammered into a
copper coupling for strength and fire retardant. It is then wrapped with cotton batting
and secured with cotton string. YOU MUST USE 100% COTTON STRING or else
your torch may fail with disastrous results. The batting should just cover the coupling.
The other end may be wrapped in "vet wrap" or some other tape in order to assist in
gripping the torch.
Paddlefish says to everyone:
knows all about vet wrap.......in fact, I'm wearing it now. ~s~
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Clean-up
Reuse of materials:
Unused alcohol should be poured back into the bottle. The used torches should be air
dried. If this is not possible, put them in baggies and air dry them at home, but be
warned you are making a possible bomb when you do this so DO NOT
COMPLETELY CLOSE THE BAGGIE. Take them out immediately after returning
home and air dry them away from flame. The leather rounds should be air dried and
the used cotton balls thrown away or if possible, allowed to burn out then thrown
away.
Storage of materials
Store all glass in a way that it will not be impacted. All glassware should be inspected
before each use by both the Dom/Domme and the submissive. Toys and all
flammables should be stored away from ignition sources.
Wraith {tyme}says to Paddlefish:
kinky! Can I light you on fire now ?..*G*
Wraith's ~tyme~says to Paddlefish:
loves that stuff for bondage tape *w*
Wraith {tyme}says to tyme:
what is it ?..and where is it ?
Paddlefish
says to Wraith: You may not! You may, however, clean my cups. ~g~
Paddlefish says to Wraith:
Glassware! I meant glassware! ~L~
Paddlefish says to tyme: ~nodding~
Wraith {tyme}says to Paddlefish:
I only clean up to a C cup..your on your own after that
Paddlefish says to Wraith:
~staring at my mermaid training bra~
Wraith's ~tyme~says to Wraith:
you can get it at some pharmacies or vet online catalog supply sites *s*
Wraith {tyme}says to tyme:
Ah good..order some pet
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
The most important thing to keep in mind with fire play is safety. Practice safe
handling of fire and start small. Be careful. Keep a fireproof blanket on hand. Make
sure your bottom is not chilled and does not have a condition that gives him or her
poor circulation to the skin. Keep in mind that you as the top are taking responsibility
for your bottom when doing fire play. If your bottom is injured during play, it is your
responsibility to take care of them. Play responsibly.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
BDSM activities are a lot of work but are certainly well worth the efforts and time for
some of us
Fire and nudity are two things most would have thought are best avoided in
combination but you will see...they can be so much fun. So let's finish up with a tiny
scene report:
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
He orders the submissive to strip and put her long dark hair up into a bun on top of
her head. Having done that she is ordered to lay face down on a massage table covered
with damp towels. Making certain His second is ready and close by, He begins the
scene by taking Q-tips soaked in alcohol brought to flame and lightly dragging them up
over and across her back, following them with His hand to snuff out any residual
flames. This is called the *warm-up period*.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Next come the Fire wands, He uses them to gently tap her body all over in no certain
pattern, leaving them to touch her flesh just long enough for her nerves to register the
heat of the flames. Every few taps He thuds a wand onto her ass letting some of the
flaming liquid spray out to the delight of the crowd. The submissive is ordered to turn
over now and a damp bit of cloth is placed over her pussy. Then the Fire wands are
applied to her breasts, nipples and belly. Dragged down her thighs and thwapped off
the bottoms of her feet.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
Fire wands are just the beginning, the easy intro. Over the next half hour, He uses
flaming canes, exploding flash cotton, and then twin floggers made of Kevlar that he
soaks in alcohol, lights, and uses to flog the submissive as she stands braced and tied
against a big wooden X, the St Andrew's Cross. Someone dims the lights and you can
appreciate the full effect of the whirling, flaming floggers.
Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh, the floggers fly in big blazing circles hitting the submissive
and then wheeling back in an arc of fire.
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
For his finale, He lays the submissive on her back, down on the table and forms trails
of alcohol in patterns across her back, ass and legs. He orders the lights dimmed even
more. He fires up a violet wand letting the blue and yellow static electricity spark —
bzzit bzzit bzzit.
Holding it just above her back, he activates it again and a spark flies from the glass tip of
the violet wand onto the submissive’s back, igniting the trails of alcohol.
Then He makes a few small rings out of flash cotton and places them on her back and
ass, using the violet wand to set them off.
But he’s not done. While she is still lying down, He uses soft wax to form several
small bowls down her back. He pours in some alcohol in each and lights them. The
submissive has become “a human candelabra!”
Paddlefish says to everyone:
Kevlar? ~now worried~
Wraith's ~tyme~says to everyone:
